Waterborne Paint Products

The Wave of the Future

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) contribute to smog pollution, ozone layer depletion, and adverse health effects to the community. In California, it is estimated that over 20 tons of VOC are emitted daily. Legislation has been passed to reduce VOC in California, and the goal is to reduce it by 75%.

Waterborne products use water as one of the main solvents and water-soluble ingredients instead of petroleum-based resins and solvents. Waterborne automotive paint products emit almost one-half less VOC than solvent-borne products. Although there are currently no written regulations requiring the switch from solvent-borne to waterborne products, waterborne products are available.

Switching from solvent-borne to waterborne systems can be time-consuming and costly. The switch includes technical training for paint technicians and equipment conversions at the body shop. Converting may require upgrades to air compressors and air filtration for the incoming spray booth air. Needless to say, there are many considerations when an owner chooses to convert.

United Auto Body makes business decisions that are environmentally responsible. We are a family-owned and operated business since 1992 and have always taken steps to be more environmentally-friendly by promoting pollution prevention and protecting the environment.* That is why we have taken the initiative to convert to the waterborne system. Last year we sent our main paint technician to Los Angeles for training and acquired all of the technology to support the switch. We pride ourselves in being one of the few auto body shops that have taken proactive steps to help the environment.

Rest assured that when you choose to do business with United Auto Body, you choose to help the community and the environment. By doing our part in operating our auto body shop in a more environmentally responsible way, we are setting a trend to other body shops. We are a very proud promoter of community health and safety!

*Other ways that United Auto Body is helping the environment is by selecting eco-friendly promotional items. Our current promotional items include free eco-friendly grocery bags that come in two sizes and free tire pressure gauges. This is available to all who visit our shop.
