Tire Safety Tips
Come in to United Auto Body & Paint today for a FREE tire pressure gauge.
Blowouts are the leading cause of rollover accidents, and spinouts may occur when tires are bald, especially on wet roads. Low tire pressure is also a contributing factor to premature tire failure and blowouts. Although United Auto Body & Paint is not in the tire business, we provide these safety tips for your benefit to prevent an accident from occurring.
Remember, tires affect the safety and drivability of your vehicle. Proper tire pressure will keep you safe and will save you money. Fuel efficiency is affected by your tire pressure. By improving the gas mileage of your vehicle, you are burning less fuel, thereby saving money and helping the environment.
Here are some simple Tire Safety Tips:
- Check your tire pressure regularly. This should be done once a month and before a long trip. Tire pressure specifications can be found in your owner's manual or on a sticker on the driver side doorjamb on most cars. Tires should be checked while cool because heat increases the pressure and can hide an under-inflated tire. Don't forget the spare tire!
- Add air to under-inflated tires. Under-inflated tires have more rolling resistance which will increase fuel use. This can also lead to tire failure.
- Look for tire damage. When you check the tire pressure, you should also inspect the tire for bulges, cracks and cuts. Any tire deformity should be brought to the attention of a tire center for a professional inspection.
- Check for tread depth. If the tread is low or the tire is balding, your tires should be replaced. If the inside and outside edge of the tires are worn unevenly, this is usually a sign that the vehicle is out of alignment. Proper alignment optimizes handling and helps prevent uneven tire wear.
- Rotate your tires every 5, 000 to 7,000 miles to ensure that all four tires wear evenly. This can be done routinely with your oil changes.
- Balance your tires if you begin to feel a back-and-forth vibration in the steering wheel. This is a fairly inexpensive procedure.
- Always replace a worn or damaged tire. Tires are not cheap, but they are one of the most important components of your vehicle. Tires are what connect your vehicle to the road. Their functionality should not be compromised.
If you stop by our shop, we will offer to check your tire pressure for FREE and will provide you with your very own tire gauge to keep in your glove compartment. This is one way that United Auto Body & Paint contributes to saving the environment.
